Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro Review

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is an Indian Art Film or as my brother says, “The type of movies actors would do when they were at start of their career and wouldn’t get any movie”. It follows lives of two goofy yet righteous partners who are trying to make it big with their career in photography, and while trying so, get stuck in loop of the world of corruption and wrongdoings. It was directed by Kundan Shah, and stars a hoard of legendary theater actors, like Naseeruddin Shah, Satish Shah, Om Puri, Satish Kaushik, Pankaj Kapur, Bhakti Barve, and Ravi Baswani

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is a mirror to society, it tells us the haunting tale of how corrupt prevails at the end. It shows you how short attention span of the public is, that no matter what crimes you commit, they’ll forget about it. It tells you how deep-rooted the corruption is, and how oppressed the people actually are, without even realizing it. Kundan puts light on all this stuff with help of humor, in a way that the entertainment factor remains all time high and the message is loud and clear.

Humor of this movie is not something you would go out and put in just one category, sometimes it’s very clever, sometimes it’s just plain illogical. Sometimes the humor comes from the dialogues, sometimes it comes from the actions performed, sometimes it goes ahead with randomness, sometimes it’s really well established, and sometimes it doesn’t have any structure, sometimes it is structured really well. It goes slapstick, it goes dark, it goes tragedy and it even goes deadpan at points. You get the point, right? BUT none of it takes away from the actual meat of the story. The movie is a masterclass in this aspect, it knows when to make a joke, and when to be serious about the matter. For Instance, whole third act is filled with some of the funniest I have seen in quite a while, the whole last scene of the play were comedic factor on peak, but all the comedy combined didn’t undermine the powerful punch Climax had for the audience.

Social message this movie is trying to grasp on, never feels much preachy, sure a little preachy at points, but not more than it was necessary in the bigger scheme. It was so easy for it to go down the drain of over-preachy-ness but the movie holds itself pretty well, and delivers the punches like no other.

You got powerhouse of actors, so you’d expect them to do wonders, and they do. I haven’t seen such comic timing from any actor in my life. There was not a single actor, major or extra who felt out of place, except Satish Shah, who should’ve been in a coffin in third actor, but anyhow, loved every bit of acting.

Also, a big shoutout to the use of “Hum Honge Kaamyab Aik Din”, used to enhance the meaning of the movie, and so well placed, I must add.

All in all, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is a movie that starts with a Ray of Hope, and ends in gloomy and depressed ally that is everyday life of a common man.

10/10
